A student flees from the University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein campus after security personnel used force to suppress students this week.

“Students were storming the gate at Doornfontein [campus]. There was no clarity of who was a journalist. Security had to push them back. They didn’t have any identification on them and they weren’t carrying big cameras. Many were holding hand-held devices like cellphones. We are studying footage of what happened but no action has been taken against the security yet.” — University of Johannesburg spokesperson Kaamini Reddy
