GAUTENG BEAT EASTERNS BY FIVE

GAUTENG moved to the top of the Standard Bank log after beating former table-toppers Easterns by five wickets at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Wednesday. Easterns were all-out for 112 in just over 40 overs and Gauteng looked set for an easy win. They did not reckon 19-tear-old Albie Morkel into the equasion, however, and he claimed the wickets of Ken Rutherford (7), Derek Crookes (0) and Andrew Hall (25) to finish with 3/25 from nine overs, giving the Gauteng charge some serious flak. In the end, however, the Gauteng bats turned out to be too strong and claimed their eighth successive victory.
