Quake rescue workers downbeat

Rescue workers were downbeat on Sunday about finding survivors in the rubble of Bam, two days after a devastating earthquake destroyed 70% of the southeast Iranian town of 100 000 people with tens of thousands feared dead. The Iranian interior minister said the hope of finding survivors is ”very small”.

Bam earthquake toll revised to 26 271

The earthquake that devastated the southeast Iranian city of Bam on December 26 killed 26 271 people, according to a new and dramatically lower death toll announced on Monday by the Islamic republic’s official statistics centre. The previous official toll from the quake had stood at 43 000 dead.
