Property prices will go down!” This was the greeting Wits doctoral fellow Detlev Krige received when he announced to his companion at a drinking hole in Rockville, Soweto, that he was about to become a neighbour. This was not a camping trip for softies. We had to take all our own water — for both drinking and washing. Toilet facilities extended to a spade that you had to take with you to a secluded bit of the bush.
