No more ‘top guns’ in SA
In the 1980s every young pilot’s dream was to be Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, in the film Top Gun. But this is not so anymore, the South African Air Force said on Friday. ”Their role model is no longer the guy … with the big watch and sunglasses; it is a four-bar [commercial airline] captain who is driving a big car,” said Major General Des Barker.

SA’s Top Gun trainees take off in Makhado
South Africa’s version of Top Gun is running again with the first 10 Hawk lead-in fighter-trainer aircraft officially handed over to 85 Combat Flying School at the Makhado air-force base on Thursday. Minister of Defence Mosiuoa Lekota also officially reopened the school on Thursday.

Order restored after prison strike turns deadly
Order has returned to the privately owned Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre in Makhado, Limpopo, a spokesperson said on Wednesday — this after a strike by prison officials led to the death of a 37-year-old inmate and the injury of another. The Department of Correctional Services and police were called in on Tuesday night.

Nineteen die as overloaded taxi plunges over cliff
Nineteen people, including two toddlers, died when a minibus taxi plunged down a cliff next to the N1 highway between Makhado and Musina on Friday, Limpopo police said. Spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said the 16-passenger taxi was overloaded, carrying 26 people, all Zimbabwean nationals. The taxi was on its way to Musina.
