Spaniard Garcia sets pace at breezy Sawgrass

Spaniard Sergio Garcia, steadily regaining confidence in his putting, took advantage of an early tee-off time to seize a two-stroke lead in the Players Championship first round on Thursday. Seeking his first PGA Tour title in almost three years, Garcia fired a sparkling six-under-par 66 at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass.

Grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory

At about 6pm last Sunday, after the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek in Malelane, the usual happened. Ernie Els gave a loser’s speech at a time when everyone was expecting him to threaten Tiger Woods. Even John Bickerton was in shock after having to be hauled from the clubhouse to collect the R1,4-million.
