Chinese vessel bearing arms stopped in Durban
The South African Police Service’s explosives unit confirmed on Wednesday that an uncleared Chinese vessel docked at the outer anchorage of Durban harbour was carrying arms. Leonard Hadebe, head of Durban customs, said: ”We have confirmed that the shipment was headed for Zimbabwe.”

Protesters barricade Durban township
Scrap cars, fridges and burning tyres were used to barricade several Durban roads on Monday as about 500 residents demanded that a local ward councillor leave the area. The residents are demanding that an African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor leave his office and move out of the area as he had ”not kept his word on service delivery”.

Murdered KZN woman ‘was state witness in fraud case’
A woman who was shot dead in front of her two children before being robbed of R70 in Pinetown on Wednesday morning had reportedly turned state witness in a Department of Transport fraud case. Futhi Ncwane’s estranged husband, Popo, said: ”Futhi was going to be a state witness in a fraud case involving the Department of Transport.”

A 49-year-old man, who allegedly had been raking in millions of rands by manufacturing fake documents, was arrested in Durban on Thursday night. He had been operating a home affairs ”office” from his home, said police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge on Friday.

Policeman fights for life after mall shoot-out
A Durban policeman is undergoing emergency surgery after he was shot twice in the chest while trying to apprehend armed robbers fleeing a crime scene, police said on Thursday. Four armed robbers hit the Beverley Jewellery store at the Pavilion mall in Westville at about 10am and Detective Andre Mostert of the Berea police station intervened.

Exchange student raped in university residence
An American exchange student from California was raped in the early hours of Tuesday morning in a women’s residence at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. South African Police Service spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge confirmed that the incident occurred at about 1.30am.

Sugar-cane murder accused appear in court
The case against a 36-year-old man accused of murdering 10 KwaZulu-Natal women and dumping their bodies in sugar-cane fields was remanded on Friday in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court for further investigation. Police: Bomb attached to cash van in Durban
A bomb that was attached to a cash-in-transit vehicle in Durban was defused by the police’s bomb squad on Friday afternoon, police said. Spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge confirmed the incident at a shopping mall in Durban’s Montclair suburb, but said details were sketchy.

Durban policeman arrested for rape
A policeman has been arrested for allegedly raping a sex worker, Durban police said on Monday. The man, together with a colleague, picked up the woman in a police vehicle, Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said. ”The officer then dropped off his colleague and drove to a secluded spot in the Brighton Beach area where he raped her.”

Durban harbour water recovering from chemical spill
Water quality in Durban’s harbour has started to improve following the release of chemicals from a blazing chemical storage depot, a senior Water Affairs and Forestry Department official said on Friday. The chemicals were released into the harbour for three hours on Tuesday night during the blaze.

Worker reported missing after Durban inferno

Hijackers run rampant on KZN North Coast
A man was wounded and a woman and two good Samaritans robbed of their vehicles amid a high-speed chase on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) North Coast, police said on Wednesday. Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said a woman was hijacked and robbed of her Nissan Almera in Mandini, near the Tugela River, on Tuesday night.
