Famed composer ‘was fascinated by patterns’

Composer Gyorgy Ligeti, who fled Hungary after the 1956 revolution and gained fame for his opera <i>Le Grand Macabre</i> and his work on the soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s <i>2001: A Space Odyssey</i>, died on Monday. He was 83. Ligeti was celebrated as one of the world’s leading 20th-century musical pioneers.

Many tonnes of explosives disappear in Iraq

Several hundred tonnes of conventional explosives are missing from a former Iraqi military facility that once played a key role in Saddam Hussein’s efforts to build a nuclear bomb, the United Nations nuclear agency confirmed on Monday. The explosives include HMX and RDX, which can be used to demolish buildings and down jetliners.
